Timely Information Consolidates Customer Loyalty

German Rail (DB) views passenger information as a marketing tool to help keep pace with developments in passenger transportation and to respond appropriately to the challenges of a competitive market. This article reviews DB's new passenger information system that has the following two objectives: to achieve significant and tangible improvements in the quality of passenger information, particularly when timetable irregularities occur, and to provide passengers with reliable, up to date and demand driven information during the entire travel experience. DB's passenger information system (RIS) is a modular system comprising five basic modules and two supplementary modules. RIS-online provides up to date data showing station display boards with information on delayed services; RIS-KiN is a personal passenger information service provided by 5000 local service customer advisers (KiN) equipped with mobile terminals. Additional personal passenger information service will be provided by train attendants who have been equipped with mobile terminals. RiS-RegioZug will offer public address announcements and position reports in local trains, RiS-Station offers improved passenger information via station public address announcements.
