Recycling Benefits for HMA Producers

Reclaimed asphalt paving (RAP) is usually produced by milling an existing asphalt pavement or by crushing chunks of an old pavement that has been removed. This article considers the benefits of benefits for hot mix asphalt (HMA) producers. The author contends that HMA producers can incorporate RAP into their procedures with relatively little expense. The author outlines different methods of recycling, including batch plant recycling, the use of the bucket elevator for RAP-entry, and drum mix recycling. The author concludes that in addition to the obvious benefit of reducing production costs, recycling asphalt pavements have the added environmental benefits of reusing valuable aggregates, reducing the amount of virgin asphalt binder needed, and conserving valuable landfill space from unnecessary disposal of old asphalt.
