Closure to "Impact of Stops on Vehicle Fuel Consumption and Emissions" by Hesham Rakha and Yonglian Ding
Closure to a discussion of an article with the aforementioned title, published in this journal (Vol. 129, No. 1, January/February 2003), is presented. The author argues that the original study, which attempts to systematically quantify the impact of vehicle stops and their associated levels of acceleration and deceleration on vehicle fuel consumption and emission rates, can be applied to the field. Their claim is based on numerous validation exercises of their model against field measurements using on-board emission measurement devices. The results demonstrated a high level of consistency between the model estimates and the field measurements.
