Targeting Reliability and Comfort in Vehicle Retrofits

This paper describes how, when an operator needs to achieve specific reliability goals, but doesn’t need or cannot afford a comprehensive overhaul or replacement fleet procurement, a focused rebuild program can be an attractive alternative. By developing to achieve a defined set of specific service goals, a targeted program can be a more cost-effective way to meet then service needs. While this type of program is not suitable for all circumstances, it may prove acceptable to meet goals such as passenger amenities or specific reliability issues. The development of such a program, while not unduly complicated, requires the evaluation of many different factors and consideration of an innumerable combination of variables and alternatives. As such, the successful development of a focused program requires organization and a systematic approach. Working from the foundation of a set of defined service or reliability goals, the program is build up in an organized manner, maintaining consistent focus on the development methodology and the overall objectives.
