What is the Meaning of Fuzzy Costs in Fuzzy Traffic Assignment Models?
This theoretical essay explores the issue of fuzzy costs used in traffic assignment models. The idea is to separate different possible semantics, namely imprecision, uncertainty and grade of preference. The classically encountered approach is based on the gathering of those different meanings into a single fuzzy cost. However, this approach may sometimes lead to inconsistencies. This paper proposes another approach, based on decision theory with possibility measures. The proposed approach gives a comprehensive framework for the handling of imprecision and uncertainty in route choice modeling.
