TRANSPORTATION AND SAFETY IN JAPAN : P-DRGS AND ECO-POINT TDM PROJECT IN THE SECOND STAGE AT THE AICHI EXPO

This article profiles transportation and safety as specifically related to the Probe-vehicle-based Dynamic Route Guidance System (P- DRGS) and the Eco-Point TDM projects taking place in Japan. PRONAVI is a prototype multimodal dynamic route guidance system that involves a central server which calculates travel times and sends the results to a terminal. The terminal also displays train routes, estimated carbon dioxide emissions for each route, construction/traffic restriction information, in addition to available park and ride information. The Eco-Point TDM project is focused on encouraging changes in attitudes towards public transportation. It involves a system in which commuters in highly trafficked urban areas are awarded points for demonstrating environmental awareness by choosing to use public transit. Points are accumulated and then exchanged for prepaid subway fare cards or other incentives such as restaurant discount coupons. The article also discusses efforts to link the Eco-Point system with the PRONAVI system, thus providing commuters with incentive awards that could be adjusted to traffic congestion levels.
