FEDS DECLARE BAY BRIDGE WELDS SOUND; REPAIRS UNDER WAY

Independent field and destructive tests conducted on extricated welds from the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reveal that the bridge welds are free of defects. The bridge was subject to scrutiny after fifteen former employees claimed that defective welds were deliberately left in place. Welding is thus set to resume on the remaining four footings. Construction on the bridge has been delayed due to criticisms by lawmakers that the self-anchored suspension segment of the new span is too costly.
