On the Forefront - An Innovative Approach to Operator Training for State and Federal Certifications

This paper describes how the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is an actively responsive agency that provides assistance to Florida’s transit properties in the subject areas of maintenance, planning, marketing and operations through education, training, technical assistance, procurement and research. The FDOT is proactive in all of their efforts and in particular they are on the cutting edge of providing and promoting Federal and State certified training for Florida’s transit operator trainers. In 2000, the Florida Department of Transportation contracted with the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida (USF) to develop and administer the Florida Operator Trainer Training Program. The program, one of the first of its kind in the nation, promotes a Federal bus operator certification and offers critical and relevant state specific transit training classes for a State certification.
