Mapping Delaware through Partnerships

This article describes the completion of Delaware's Spatial Data Framework and the building of the Data Mapping Integration Laboratory (DataMIL) to serve it on the Web, a project that required partnerships and teamwork built through shared efforts that meet collective goals. The author notes that Delaware's small size made it easier to collect the data needed to create a seamless, statewide digital map as well as to forge a tight-knit team from all levels of government to integrate, improve, and share data. The author describes the framework data collection in Delaware, the implementation team, the DataMIL program, the map production laboratory, and recommendations for other states undertaking this kind of project. The author concludes that when key players come together as a team, it is possible to create a distributed, but integrated, spatial data framework that provides a dependable, widely available digital base map.
