Bus Door System Considerations for Aging and Physically Challenged Populations

The bus doors are the first and last vehicle system encountered by a rider. Door systems have evolved over time in response to changes in operating practices, vehicle designs and accessibility requirements. Some of the evolutionary changes have had unintended consequences for riders, and, in particular, for Aging, Physically Challenged and Temporarily Challenged riders. This paper summarizes key aspects of contemporary transit bus door systems, explores the implications for riders of characteristics such as door geometry and opening size, and suggests approaches to enhance the interaction between bus doors and special rider populations.
