Revisiting the Relationship between Profitability and Air Carrier Safety in the US Airline Industry

This work extends prior analysis of commercial aircraft accidents by re-examining trends with extended post deregulation data. The results raise some concerns, one of which stems from an analysis of an aggregate accident data that demonstrates, in some cases, a reversal of declining trends in accident rates. The analysis of current accident rates shows a stabilization in normalized accident rates with an increasing trend in absolute accident rates, indicating the potential dominance of industry growth over air carrier safety improvement. Further, an inverse relationship exists between financial performance and accident rates, particularly for the smaller, regional air carriers.
