Victory Once More
This article describes the construction of twin box girder structures that replaced an aging swing bridge in New Jersey. The bridges feature main spans that are the longest box girder spans of match-cast concrete in the United States. Each structure consists of a 440 ft main span, two 330 ft side spans, 20 approach spans, 22 precast piers and two cast-in-place abutments. A total of 927 superstructure box girder segments were used. Using a carefully staged construction sequence, the first of the parallel structures was built in 15 months. Superstructure erection of the remaining crossing is on track to be completed in just 9 months.
