Short Sea Shipping and its Role in Logistics Supply Chains: A European Perspective

This paper has presented of the short sea shipping (SSS) industry in Europe, and has discussed what is meant by this industry, what types of ships are involved, what cargoes are carried what are the main geographic areas of operations, what are the industry's strengths and weaknesses, and what users demand from the industry before it can become a realistic choice for many in multimodal logistics transport chains. The answers to many of the above questions should encourage the European Union in its development of new intra-European transport concepts based on multimodal approaches capable of supporting the movement of goods, reaping the economic benefits offered by each transport mode individually, and, providing the lowest cost option when acknowledging social impacts.
