Pressing Ahead with New Rollers

The new asphalt mix designs that have been developed over the last decade demand different methods of compaction. This has led to the evolution of a new generation of compactors. This article describes some of these new compactors. Compactors are being developed that provide ultra-high vibration or that vary amplitude with vibration according to the type of asphalt and aggregate being placed. One manufacturer uses an oscillatory system on its compactor that ensures that the roller drums maintain constant contact with the ground for faster compaction. Another manufacturer has developed a tandem-drum roller that has slanted drum support legs that offer operators a clear view of the drum edges. For more efficient compaction performance on non-cohesive materials and mixed soils, the roller of another compactor uses a directed exciter mechanism to automatically adjust the output energy of the drum to optimize compaction of the target material.
