A National Debate About Amtrak Has Begun: An Innovation Briefs Commentary
The stage appears to be set for a fundamental reassessment of Amtrak's structure and role in the oversight and development of passenger rail service in the United States. This article argues that the logic of a federal-state partnership to improve and maintain the physical infrastructure while calling upon the states to assume responsibility for passenger rail operation seems quite compelling, and perhaps the Administrations proposal to end Amtrak subsidies will spark critical decisions.
