Shunting of Passenger Train Units in a Railway Station

This paper describes the train unit shunting problem in a railroad station. For a solution to the problem, the paper proposes tracks that can be approached from two sides , trains that may consist of several train units, and a uniform way to deal with mixed arrivals and departures of trains. In the solution approach, the problem is decomposed into two steps, where one step matches arriving and departing train units (the TMP) and the other step assign train units to shunt tracks (the TAP). The results show that the TMP can be solved quickly by the mixed integer programming solver; a column generation heuristic is proposed for the TAP.
