Smart Boxes: RFID Can Improve Efficiency, Visibility and Security in the Global Supply Chain

This paper examines significant questions regarding the reliability and protection of the global supply chain. A number of large over-ocean shipping companies in the United States, that export and import products abroad, were surveyed in order to obtain answers to the following questions: (1) How do companies obtain information about the products they are shipping? (2) How do the companies know when the items being shipped will arrive, in order to adjust their inventories? (3) Have companies found ways to reduce risks and working capital? (4) In the light of post 9/11 security threats, have companies found ways to secure and protect their supply chain? In addition, the company executives were asked about a proposed supply chain solution that uses radio frequency identification (RFID) for tracking and security.
