Discussion of "Local Buckling of Fiber Reinforced Plastic Composite Structural Members with Open and Closed Cross Sections" by Laszlo P. Kollar

This article comments on a research study in which the local buckling analysis of fiber reinforced plastic composite open and closed thin-walled section beams and columns were presented (Kollar, 2003). Explicit expressions were developed for axially loaded and for bent box-, I-, C-, Z-, and L-members. The researcher offered simple, explicit formulas contain the width and the bending stiffnesses of each wall segment. In this commentary, Mottram contends that without direct access to the software used by Kollar, these numberical methods cannot be recommended for routine design application. Mottram recommends a simpler formula and briefly outlines its use.
