City Interactions - The Dynamics of Passenger and Freight Flows

After a general discussion of domestic passenger and freight activity, this chapter is organized by mode and it begins with a discussion of highway transportation for both passenger travel and freight movements. Then it is followed by a discussion of rail interactions similarly in both passenger and freight dimensions. The chapter also includes the status of Amtrak and the topic of high-speed rail. Subsequently, air transportation between, and the impact upon, cities are discussed. The final section deals with maritime interactions and the role of ports in the domestic transportation system.
