Saudis Launch Rail Landbridge Project

This article describes the Saudi Railways Organisation's (SRO) $US 1.3 billion rail landbridge project that is designed to expand the country's existing railway by 2900 km. This undertaking includes the following three projects: 1: the Saudi Landbridge that involves a new 950 km line from Riyadh west to the Red Sea port of Jeddah, and a 115 km line from Dammam north to Jubail; the existing Riyadh-Dammam railway will also be upgraded; 2: the Western Railway that involves 750 km of new lines from Jeddah to Mecca, Medina and Yanbu; and 3: a 1300 km mineral railway running from Riyadh to Hazm Al-Jalamid. The new lines will be designed for a maximum speed of 250 km/h for passenger and 140 km/h for freight trains. When completed, the new lines will substantially reduce travel time between the country's main centers of population and industry.
