Walking in the Footsteps of a Hero

Rear Admiral Edward "Iceberg" Smith had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his career, he would sail the oceans of the world, command numerous ships at sea, endure combat in two World Wars, and become a world-renowned oceanographer, accomplished diplomat, war hero and inspirational leader. This article provides a brief biography and summarizes the leadership lessons that can be derived from his career: (1) suffer from a terrible need to know; (2) focus on what you can control rather than what you do not; and (3) concentrate on possibilities rather than limits.
