The Light Rail Transit Project of Houston, Texas, USA: Phase 1

The article reviews the Phase 1 completion of the first light rail transit (LRT) line of Houston, Texas, the fourth largest city in the USA, on 1 January, 2004. The METRORail line, planned, designed, built and operate by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, is a 7.5 mile north-south corridor that links Houston's central business district with numerous residential and commercial areas as well as several colleges, universities, medical and research institutions, and entertainment and cultural venues. The article examines various aspects of the new line as well as extensions planned.
