REFLECTIONS ON CONCRETE DURABILITY AND ON INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES ON CONCRETE DURABILITY. IN: INVESTIGATING CONCRETE. SELECTED WORKS OF BRYANT AND KATHARINE MATHER

The Organizing Committee for this conference requested that some remarks be made and some comments prepared for inclusion into the Proceedings. These words are intended as a basis for the former and to serve as the latter. We observe that: Concrete is international; it is made locally; it has finite variability; it can be made to be very uniform; and it can be made to last as long as necessary. An unsolved problem is the assessment of the nature and the severity of the exposure, so that requirements can be graduated according to severity. Only when this problem is solved will we be able to stamp out specification overkill. The Organizing Committee also suggested that biographical and bibliographic data be furnished.
