THE FIELD PERFORMANCE OF FRONTAL AIR BAGS: A REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
This article presents a broad but not a deep overview of data and information describing the air bag's field experience. Described are characteristics of air bags that are good, such as fatalities for drivers and front seat passengers have been largely reduced due to air bags, as have severe head injuries. Also described are characteristics that must be considered bad: children can be killed by an air bag and air bags can cause more harm than they mitigate in as many as half of the situations in which they deploy. Overall, the paper concludes that the performance of the airbag is important.
