MANAGING OCEAN AND COASTAL AREAS, ECOSYSTEMS, AND RESOURCES

This article provides an overview of the more than 200 recommendations included in the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy report that span the gamut of ocean and coastal issues, ranging from upstream areas to the depths of the sea, from practical problem solving to broad guidance for ocean policy. The article focuses on the following specific issues: conserving and restoring coastal habitat; guarding people and property against natural hazards; managing sediment and shorelines; supporting marine commerce and transportation; addressing coastal water pollution; limiting vessel pollution and improving vessel safety; preventing the spread of invasive species; reducing marine debris; achieving sustainable fisheries; protecting marine mammals and endangered marine species; preserving coral reefs and other coral communities; setting course for sustainable marine aquaculture, connecting oceans and human health; and managing offshore energy and other mineral resources.
