A SIMPLE ANALYSIS OF THE RENT SEEKING AIRLINES, AIRPORTS AND POLITICIANS
This paper's goal was to offer a broad view of the complexities involved in analyzing the economic rents that can be associated with airport slots. The emergent climate under which air transportation services are increasingly being provided moves airlines and airports away from entities that see their rationale in terms of meeting a public service obligation to one of commercial viability and profit making. In a commercial environment, economic rent extraction can act as an incentive to allocate resources more efficiently, but much depends on the institutional environment in which competition takes place and on the technical abilities of the players to themselvesact and price efficiently.
