Specialized chemicals, computerized discharge controls, road and weather information systems (RWIS), automated treatment systems, and automatic vehicle location (AVL) systems have redefined how to deal with snow on roadways in the 21st century. This article profiles different state departments of transportation in their use of various snow-fighting technologies. The New Hampshire Dept. of Transportation (NHDOT) is profiled for its use of liquid anti-icing chemicals along with its changing plans for non-chlorine liquid anti-icing, and salt reduction due to cost. The article also describes how the NHDOT uses chemical additives for pre-wetting rock salt and abrasives. Suggestions are given on how to establish an effective program using a Road Weather Information System. A sidebar on weather maintenance terms is included.
