New automatic vehicle identification (AVI) tags can be permanently installed in cars or on Velcro, making them easily removable. This article looks at different AVI tag suppliers are notes that they are adapting to mandates for radio frequency identification (RFID) tags and are innovating AVI tags such that they become standard in vehicles. Several barriers to AVI and RFID deployment remain, including the lack of power on stand alone AVI tags and the diverse work environment of a warehouse, with its multiplicity of materials. The article looks at how the automobile industry is adapting to vehicle tracking mandates from the government and newer possible applications such as vehicle avoidance systems.
