OSLO ONLINE : NORWAY'S CAPITAL TAKES PRECAUTIONS
The Norwegian Public Road Administration (NPRA) is responsible for keeping all of the roads within the Stor-Oslo (Greater Oslo) region free from ice and snow at all times, which is a hard task given Norway's harsh winter climate. The NPRA contracted with a Finland- headquartered weather system provider to supply and install remote road weather stations (RWSs), and ensure continuous weather related data and forecasts to NPRA contractors via the Internet. The system, in partnership with the Norwegian National Meteorological Institute (MI), prepares and transmits a number of 24 hour forecasts through out the day with detailed information about temperature and road condition for the coming night, as well as forecasts of thermal maps of the complete network. The NPRA accesses network information through a web browser (IceWeb) and application software.
