WEATHER ON 511 HITS THE ROAD

The nationally abbreviated dialing code 511, a service launched in 2000, provides travel information about road and weather conditions. The 511 Deployment Coalition formed in 2001 by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), ITS America, and the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), and developed a series of guidelines, or deployment assistance reports (DARs), to aid the launch of 511 systems around the country. DAR #6, "Weather and Environmental Content on 511 Services," was developed through cooperation between U.S. state DOTs, transit agencies, and weather agencies. The DAR builds upon past efforts, such as the Weather Information for Surface Transportation (WITS), the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)'s Weather-Responsive Traffic Management Concept of Operations, the FHWA's Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), and the University of North Dakota's Advanced Traveler Weather Information System (ATWIS). DAR #6 also uses "exception" reporting, so that travelers are aware of abnormal conditions and can act accordingly.
