TRENITALIA CARGO GOES OFF THE RAILS
This article reviews the plans for expansion of the rail freight industry in Italy, including co-operation with other transport modes. The national rail freight company Trenitalia Cargo is to be made an integrated logistics company in which rail transport will be only a part. Connections with sea transport are seen as especially important as are connections to pan-European transport corridors across Eastern Europe as well as to the West. Co-operation is sought with road transport and the business would include all transport options and warehousing. New initiatives include "rolling road" services where trucks are transported by rail on flat-bed wagons. On-board technology includes IT systems for wagon management, timetable scheduling, train monitoring and fleet assignment.
