LUBRICANT APPLICATIONS AT DEUTSCHE BAHN AG

This article gives an overview of the use of lubricants in the German railway industry, covering procurement, quality control, type, and cost savings. Procurement to the operating company's technical specifications takes account of working conditions. The number of different lubricants used is being reduced to simplify the vehicle maintenance processes and supply competition is encouraged by the use of a central purchase management office. Quality affects vehicle reliability and safety and all lubricants for safety-critical components are tested, alongside supplier assessments to encourage compliance with standards. Field and laboratory testing is performed. The most important lubricants are briefly described: engine oils, transmission oils, hydraulic oils, bearing greases, switch greases and others. Cost savings are achieved by tribological measures, including extending the intervals for oil changes and centralising purchase.
