A FRIENDLY DRIVE-IN FOR ALL YOUR PARKING NEEDS

The number of local authority 'parking shops' in the UK is increasing. Most offer a walk-in service for the payment of penalty charge notices, the issuing of residents' and business parking permits, and the provision of general parking information and advice. Some also process telephone and postal payments and enquiries. They need to be conveniently located, readily accessible and clearly visible. Examples of parking shops in London Boroughs are described. The services offered by the Tunbridge Wells' Parking Information Centre and the Slough Parking Office are outlined. Slough's office was opened at the same time that decriminalisation took place. Staff are trained to deal with customer aggression. The measures taken to protect staff are outlined. Web-based payment systems for penalties, complete with access to pictures of the offence, are being trialled. Increased enforcement of parking offences in Slough has improved traffic flow.
