A TRUE REFURBISHMENT PARTNERSHIP

Tests by Makers Technical Division and Martech for Bedfor Design Group showed that the four multi-storey car parks (MSCPs) in Bedford, UK, were suffering from corrosion of the reinforced concrete. In 2003, Makers Parking were appointed by Bedford Borough Council as their partner for the refurbishment of the Lurke Street and River Street MSCPs. Work on Lurke Street started in September 2003. The car park remained operational with areas being closed for works and then reopened. The programme involved structural repairs to the concrete, application of a coating to the soffit/vertical surfaces and deck, application of waterproofing wearing membranes, upgrading of the lighting system, installation of a corrosion monitoring system, and construction of a new parking office. Deck levels were numbered and colour coded. New APT Skidata exit/entrance barriers were installed. The car park achieved the Secure Parking Award.
