PERTH RAIL NETWORK TO DOUBLE IN SIZE

Perth's 1,518 billion Australian dollar New MetroRail project will effectively double TransPerth's four-route passenger rail network. The project involves building the Northern Suburbs Railway (NSR) extension from Currambine to Clarkson, the new Southern Suburbs Railway from central Perth to Mandurah, and a new branch line from the Armadale Line to a new station at Thornlie. The project is due for completion in 2006. The NSR extension opened in October 2004. Details are given of the design of the new lines with respect to contracts and contractors, new stations, platform design, civil works, and progress with construction. A consortium of EDI Rail and Bombardier Transportation won a contract to build and maintain 31 three-car emus and to construct a new depot at Noewrgup. Delivery of new trains began in 2004.
