MEDWAY MEDLEY

Arriva overhauled its bus fleet in the Medway towns of north Kent, UK overnight in June 2004 with the introduction of 61 new buses and extensive refurbishment of the remaining fleet. Bus services were revised and improved. Five core routes were given colour-coded route branding and put on a ten-minute daytime frequency. Route numbering has been simplified. Fully-accessible buses are standard and high-visibility destination indicators have been adopted. Timetables have been revised and made more readable. A Tube-style diagrammatic map has been developed to show all the routes. The new bus fleet has three types of bus: 49 Volvo B7TL double-deckers with TransBus ALX 400 bodies, 47 TransBus/Dennis Dart single-deckers and five Mercedes-Benz Vario midi-buses. The interiors have a light and airy feel with carpet-like floors, yellow stanchions, high-back seats and green-blue paintwork. The new vehicles have a GPS satellite-based tracking and location system and a closed-circuit television system called Arriva Proguard.
