Unlike US airports, UK airports are able to draw on almost 30 years of experience of airport security in the light of terrorist threats. The Northern Ireland conflict focused attention on the vulnerability of airports. The UK also has fewer airports than the USA. Security was stepped up at UK airports following the 2001 Al Qaeda attacks in the USA. Transport security is implemented in the UK commercial air sector by BAA. Airports have 100% baggage screening and since 2001 airports have introduced re-screening in the form of secondary searches. False-image generation is used in hand luggage screening. Heathrow and Gatwick now separate passengers from inbound flights from those on departing aircraft. BAA has increased its security staff by approximately a third and criminal-record checks are carried out for all new employees.
