This article looks at how explosives and drug detection technology is being used in airport security applications. It describes a device that uses ion mobility spectrometry technology to detect and identify tiny amounts of explosive and drug substances in under eight seconds. Twin search functions look for both mainstream explosives as well as more specific threats. This technology is highly automated, thus reducing the possibility of handling errors and accidental contamination by operators. Additionally, the trace technology is able to detect individuals who are physically carrying explosives as well as those who have recently handled explosives.
