NEW CALTRANS LEADERS SEEK BETTER WAY OF DOING BUSINESS
The California Dept. of Transportation (Caltrans), under a new leadership, is heading in a direction which is focused on reducing red tape, increasing communication, promoting new seismic codes, and examining alternative project delivery methods. This article notes the appointment of a new director, chief engineer, and deputy director to an agency that has been asked to streamline operations and promote more public private partnerships. A list of priorities for the new administration includes fulfilling a re-bid of the new San Francisco- Oakland Bay Bridge span, promoting better communications between Caltrans and local agencies, implementing probability-based load and resistance design codes for bridges, transitioning from the metric system back to English, and fostering the successful use of design- build and design sequencing methods.
