LONG OPEN ENDED PIPE PILES IN SOFT COHESIVE SOILS COMBINATION OF STATIC AND DYNAMIC TESTING. IN: CURRENT PRACTICES AND FUTURE TRENDS IN DEEP FOUNDATIONS

A case of deep foundation of open ended pipe piles in very soft cohesive soils overlying a sandy bearing stratum is presented. Five jetties of a large industrial installation have been built in intervals so experience form capacity tests could be subsequently utilized. For Jetties 1 to 3 only static tests have been executed. To speed up the testing procedure a combination of static and dynamic tests has been chose for Jetties for 4 and 5, so more piles could be tested. For static tests a settlement criteria has been defined. The comparison of static to dynamic tests showed that especially for piles in cohesive soils with little sand content dynamic tests can lead to an overestimation of capacities. A safety concept for dynamic load tests in cohesive is proposed that can be applied to similar pile soil conditions without calibration by static load tests.
