SLAB TRACK DEVELOPMENT - GUIDANCE ON RELEVANT STANDARDS AND SOURCES OF INFORMATION

Reference sources, standards and specifications to assist the designers of slab track and potential gaps in the available guidance are identified. When taken as a whole, it is considered that existing European, Network Rail and other infrastructure owner standards provide sufficient general guidance on several of the issues likely to arise during consideration of a slab track sloution. However these have typically been prepared within the context of ballasted track where design, operation and maintenance issues can be quite different from those associated with slab track. It is therefore considered that there is a requirement for guidance that clarifies the application of these standards to the provision of slab track. In the specific areas of track slab design, transition zones, testing, commissioning and decommissioning, it was found that there were no standards covering slab track. The standards developed for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link are potentially a useful basis for guidance/specification for the use of ballastless track in tunnels as they have been written specifically for the introduction of high speed trains in the UK. The design methodology developed for the trial installation at Crewe-Kidsgrove could provide a useful starting point for developing guidance covering the structural design of track slab on formation. Specifications for provision of slab track within individual infrastructure projects in Europe and elsewhere have the potential to provide relevant and useful performance criteria for development of guidance for the UK.
