Fighting Fatigue

Operator fatigue is a serious issue in transportation, and one that cuts across all transportation modes. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has been a leader in the effort to mitigate the impact of fatigue on pilots, truck drivers and motorists, and to reduce fatigue-related accidents, injuries and fatalities. However, the regulatory agencies responsible for making and enforcing the rules for these transportation modes have not always been as responsive. This article discusses how the Federal Aviation Administration and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration could better address the issue of fatigue. One step in the right direction is a course offered at the NTSB's training academy that specifically investigates human fatigue factors in transportation accidents.
