Clearing the Roads
Car-sharing is one of the latest programs to reduce traffic congestion. This article provides an overview of the concept and its benefits. There are more than a dozen car-sharing companies in the United States, operating in nine big cities and several smaller towns. In car sharing, customers are charged an annual membership fee and an hourly rate for car use. The hourly rate includes insurance, parking, maintenance and fuel. Municipal areas are supporting this concept since it can potentially remove thousands of cars from the highways, reducing pollution, energy use and congestion. Travelers are embracing the concept because it eliminates the cost and bother of car ownership and allows them to choose different vehicles for different needs. Businesses are also using membership in car sharing services to replace a fleet of company vehicles.
