AN INTEGRATED LAND TRANSPORT SYSTEM - THE SINGAPORE EXPERIENCE
Singapore has a world-wide reputation for efficiency and this extends to both its transport demand management and its excellent public transport services. In this paper, the authors look back at the early planning decisions which created the environment within which the current systems could develop. Increasingly, intelligent transport systems are being deployed and the current emphasis is on integrating these systems so that they work synergistically. The authors conclude that anticipating congestion problems early combined with a 'dare-to-do' attitude have resulted in being able to sustain a high level of service despite Singapore's compact size and rapid economic growth.
