MOVA TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROL AT 'LOW-SPEED' URBAN JUNCTIONS: COMPACT MOVA

The MOVA signalised junction control system is currently used at mainly isolated, high-speed sites. To bring the benefits of MOVA control to urban junctions, TRL under the direction of the Department for Transport, has investigated and developed improvements to MOVA to make it more suitable for low-speed urban junctions. These 'Compact MOVA' improvements reduce installation and maintenance costs in urban areas by reducing the number of IN-detectors, while bringing the increased efficiency of MOVA control to low-speed junctions. Results from simulation and street trials show that Compact MOVA typically reduces delay compared to D-system VA (standard vehicle actuation), while providing significant benefits for pedestrians. TRL will be involved in some of the early implementations to gain further experience. (A)
