PROJECTS AND WORK FOR THE TURIN METRO
Developments in the integrated system of Turin transport in Italy prior to the Winter Olympic Games in 2006 are described. Line 1 of the Turin Metro, under construction, is 13.2 km long and will have 21 stations between Collegno and Lingotto Fiere. The automatic metro of Turin uses the VAL (Light Automatic Vehicle) system designed by Matra Transport. The characteristics of a VAL train and the safety and control systems are outlined. The design of the Turin metro stations is described. The construction of the tunnel between Fermi and Porta Nuova using three tunnel boring machines is outlined.
