DISTINCTIVE ARCHITECTURE FLIES HIGH IN MADRID

A joint venture between TPS Consult, architects Estudio Lamella and Richard Rogers Partnership and engineers Initec won the design competition for the new terminal area at Barajas Airport, Madrid, Spain. This consists of a terminal building, satellite building, multi-storey car park and transport interchange linking transport systems to the automated people mover. A modular system is a feature of the main terminal and satellite buildings. These both consist of a finger-pier and central entrance area. Details are given of the concrete beams and floor slabs, use of post-tensioned concrete beams in the structural modules, and car parks.
