PRECAST TUNNEL LININGS IN THE CHANNEL TUNNEL RAIL LINK
Details are given of the underground contracts in Section 2 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) in the UK. The four main bored tunnelling contracts, the London Tunnels and the Thames Tunnel, all used the same precast concrete tunnel lining with an internal diameter of 7.15m. The linings were designed by Rail Link Engineering (RLE) for a 120-year life in saline or aggressive ground conditions. The lining has a 350mm thickness and a lining width of 1.5m. The ring has nine segments and a wedged key. The concrete specified for the precast segments is a durable concrete with a low permeability with granite or limestone aggregate, steel fibres and polypropylene fibres. The manufacture of concrete segments for Contracts 220, 240, 250, 320 and 103 is described.
