RELIEF FOR A34/M4 BOTTLENECK

A project to reduce congestion on the A34 at Junction 13 of the M4 motorway is described. The improvement involved realignment of a 3km section of the A34 to the west of Junction 13 allowing the new A34 to pass under the existing west facing slip roads and M4 embankment. The existing roundabout was kept for interchange movements between the M4 and A34 with new sliproads linking to the realigned A34. The contract was awarded to Costain with Mott MacDonald as the designer. Details are given of the construction of bridge decks for the M4 and new sliproads, the ground and foundation works, soil structure interaction analysis, and the concrete finish.
