THE USE OF INTERNATIONAL DATA ON FUEL SALES AND VEHICLE FLEET FOR THE ESTIMATION OF YEARLY NATIONAL TRAFFIC VOLUMES
The study gathered data on traffic volumes, vehicle fleet and fuel sales for several countries and analyzed the data comparability. A regression model was fitted to annual data on traffic volume, fuel sales and vehicle fleet composition for 7 European countries for the period 1980-2000. The structure of the fitted model enabled the development of a procedure for estimating yearly traffic volumes in other European countries, using their annual data on fuel sales and vehicle fleet composition. One year's traffic volumes data or qualitative assumptions may be used to calibrate this procedure to a specific country.
